outstanding a/v receiver with horrible remote.
just pulled my new marantz 7002 out of the box this morning and i was stoked. i was like a kid with a new toy while i was hooking this thing up. the build quality is top notch. i really looked this baby over good looking for anything i felt was made cheaply and i came up with nothing. in an age where electronics are known to be built poorly marantz stands apart from the pack with the quality of this device. ok so now ive looked it over and im ready to move on to all the accessories that came packed in the box with it. this is the first av receiver ive seen with so many accessories actually and for a novice user i could see someone getting a little intimidated by it all. connecting all the cords was a breeze, no problems encountered. i connected both an xbox 360 and a ps3 both to the "dvd" input using the component and hdmi respectively. the receiver doesnt have issues even though they are both connected to "dvd" something that ive run into with other receivers. with everything installed properly i finally deicde to give it a test with some music played from the ps3 hard drive. i am a very critical listener and i tried everything from opera, classic rock and, one of my favorites, a symphonic power metal band, kamelot. EVERYTHING this unit plays sounds fantastic. it truly isnt lacking anything. in comparison to my older harman kardon avr, which has respectable sound quality itself, this marantz receiver is better on all fronts. the music sounded cleaner. the highs were clear and soaring without being harsh, even at higher volumes. i also noticed that the bass had more impact than i was used to, mostly due to the ultra powerful 110 watts per channel this thing produces. keep in mind that marantz is not one of those companies that exaggerates their power outputs like most of the brands youll see in your local best buy. when a marantz receiver says 110w per channel its usually on par with other, more well known, brands 150w per channel. i chose to bi amp my front tower speakers, the jbl l890's by hooking them up to the back surround speaker terminals on the back. then with a flip of the switch you can double the power to your fronts, providing more power to your front speakers, a must for anyone with large, power hungry towers should consider. now that ive given this thing a good listen i wanted to look into my new remotes and really sink my teeth into what this unit can do. the remote is horrible. its hard to believe that a quality avr such as this one would come paired with a remote like this one. i read other reviews and saw people talk about the remote being bad but, honestly, i thought they might be overreacting. they werent. the remote comes with its own manual and for good reason, its just difficult to use. with most remotes its fairly obvious what buttons you press to get the desired result from your product, at least thats been my experience. the marantz remote has none of that. after a few minutes of toying with the remote i gave up and just used the knobs on the front of the receiver to do what i needed. the remote will obviously take some time to master, making the remote all but useless to anyone who doesnt read the manual. all in all i would definitely reccomend this receiver to anyone especially at the current price its going for on amazon. after days of searching the net and reading reviews i just couldnt find a product that could compare to this one for the price. if not for the horrible remote i would give this receiver 5 stars.Edit: after just a few days of actually owning and using this receiver i have changed my opinion. this is definitely a 5 star item. i still think the remote is confusing but, i got over it and i think you will too.

A Steal at this price - great sound and build quality
This is my second Marantz receiver, and I have been extremely happy with the first (an SR4600). I jumped on this deal when I saw it, because the unit is marked down by over 50% of MSRP, and offered significantly more power than my older model, plus HDMI and support of the latest surround codecs (DTS-HD and DD-HD). I have been using it for about two months and I am very satisfied with the purchase, allowing for some minor caveats. The first is that it often takes 3-5 seconds for the receiver to make the HDMI handshake with my components. When I watch a Blu-ray, the opening surround teaser (eg. the DTS-HD demo on Mad Men season 3 and the fireworks displays on Disney titles) doesn't cut in right away, and I miss the first few seconds of sound (once the handshake is made, you're all good for the rest of the film). Also, as some other reviewers mentioned, the remotes are very difficult to use. I use an aftermarket universal, so this is not a major concern for me. The on-screen guide is a very plain-jane, with old school blue-on-white text that reminds me of my first hi-fi VCR purchased in 1995. But it gets the job done. Lastly, like my other Marantz, this amp runs HOT. I took out the shelf above it in my rack to give it about 10 inches of breathing room, but it still cooks the cabinet. When I open the glass door after a movie finishes, I can feel the heat on my face. In all, I can live with each of the minor gripes I have, and the benefits far outweigh the cons. The Marantz sound is the best of any "mid-fi" brand I've heard, and I've owned and/or lived with Denon, Onkyo, HK, NAD, Pioneer and Yamaha. The SR7002 is a monolithic behemoth, and puts out refined power with ease. And given Marantz's conservative power ratings, 110W x 7 from them might as well be 175W per channel from Sony or the like. Music performance is truly excellent, providing a hint of warmth that doesn't bloat the bass, and sounds great with neutral or brighter speakers. This receiver was routinely selling for $1400 before the new 7000-series model came out (which seems to just offer 3D support and some updated styling), and the 7002 can now be had here for $599. Marantz also offers a 3 year warranty. If you don't see yourself going 3D in the immediate future, it's a no-brainer. You could easily spend a lot more and do worse.

Converted to Marantz!
I'm a die-hard Denon fan. When I had the chance to pick up this Marantz (Denon sister brand) at a steal of a price I jumped on it. I love the unit. The quality is second to none. The audio is phenomenal. I feel like I'm cheating on my Denon with this unit, but the sound is a little better in my opinion, and that says a lot because I still love Denon. This unit is a couple of years old and does not have the fancy graphical interface (GUI) as the Denons and the newer Marantz units, but it is still easy to setup. Once setup you will be blown away. The technology is up to date with the exception to HDMI 1.4 (3D). But that is not important to me and is easily worked around anyway. As new receivers are released with newer features, quality is sacrificed to stay within the price point. I actually think this unit will perform better than the new sr7005 in terms of sound quality based on the size and quality of the power supply which is bigger in this one. If you want power without an external 5/7 channel amplifier, you need raw power in the receiver - this one delivers!
